FAIRFAX, Va.
– George Mason University's men's volleyball team will play the first two of six straight road matches this week when it travels to Indiana for contests against Ball State and Fort Wayne.
Mason split its first two home matches after
a convincing 3-0 victory against King University last Friday and
a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to No. 9 Loyola Chicago the following night. As a result of impressive performances over the weekend, seniors
Jack Wilson and
Johnny Gomez swept the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) weekly awards.
The Patriots will seek to continue their strong displays away from home after winning three of their four road contests so far this season. Last time they were in Muncie in 2015, they swept a Ball State team that was again ranked No. 13 at the time.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Mason's first opponent this week, Ball State, is on a four-match win streak and will go into Thursday with a 6-1 overall record. Five of those wins have come against EIVA opposition while the only loss came to No. 7 Hawaii at the competitive Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Invitational, which the Rainbow Warriors hosted.
Last weekend Ball State prevailed over Harvard in five sets and Sacred Heart in three sets on the road.
On the other hand, Fort Wayne began the season with eight consecutive losses before picking up its first win of 2017 at Alderson Broaddus. The Mastodons overcame ABU in straight sets to end a 12-match losing streak dating back to April 2 last season. Seven of those losses were to ranked opponents. Mason is the sixth ranked opponent that the Mastodons will play this season after No. 8 UC Irvine, No. 4 Long Beach State, No. 14 Cal State Northridge, No. 12 UC Santa Barbara and No. 14 Penn State.
