FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team returns home to face Eastern Wrestling League foe Edinboro on Sunday at the Recreation and Athletic Complex. The match is schedule to begin at 2 p.m.
Mason (5-8, 2-2 EWL) will look to bounce back from a 24-10 loss at Clarion on Friday. The loss snapped the Patriot's four-match winning streak.
Senior
Sahid Kargbo (21-1) recorded a 16-4 major decision at 149-pounds against the Golden Eagles. He has earned bonus points in 12 of his 22 matches this season, with 10 of his wins by major decision and two by technical fall.
Kargbo, ranked No. 21 at 149-pounds in the latest NCAA Division I Coaches poll, is 4-0 against EWL conference opponents this season.
"We have a good group of guys and the coaches have us doing all the right things," Kargbo said. "We have to come back and recover from a defeat. I think we'll be alright because everyone has been giving their best effort."
Freshman
Matthew Raines (9-12) posted a 3-1 decision at 157-pounds, winning in sudden victory against Clarion when he scored an early takedown in overtime. Senior
Matthew Voss (13-9) broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown in the third period on the way to a 3-2 decision at heavyweight on Friday night.
Mason fell to Edinboro 31-7 last season and the Fighting Scots hold a 3-0 all-time record against the Patriots.
The Patriots took an early 7-3 match score lead against the Fighting Scots in last year's matchup when Vince Rodriguez notched a 12-2 major decision at 133-pounds and
Tejon Anthony won a 5-2 decision at 141-pounds. Edinboro, however, went on to win the final seven bouts of the match.
The Patriots last met the Fighting Scots in Fairfax on Jan. 31, 2015, with Edinboro winning the dual 31-14.
"It's a quick turnaround, Edinboro has the same issue after their match Friday against Rider," Mason head coach
Joe Russell said. "The Fighting Scots are a great opponent and pose a difficult task for us with several ranked wrestlers. Our guys will have another opportunity to do something special on Sunday."
