WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason women's and men's swimming and diving teams fell to George Washington on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool in Washington, D.C.
The Mason women's team was defeated 166-132 by George Washington, while the Patriot's men's team suffered a 179-114 setback against the Colonials.
On the women's side, Mason excelled in the freestyle events. Senior
Sydney Fisher won the 50-yard freestyle (23.59), with sophomore
Marla Albanese placing second (24.77) and junior
Rachel Williams finished third (24.94).

Fisher also swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (52.09), with Albanese and Williams touching the wall tied for third (54.09).
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, freshman
Hannah Ikenberry recorded a second place finish (10:31.24). Mason claimed three of the top four spots, as senior
Megan DeJong was close behind in third place (10:49.25) and senior
Erin Schulte notched a fourth place finish (10:56.13).
Senior
Steff Maurer led Mason with a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.44), followed by Williams in fourth (1:58.59) and DeJong in sixth (2:00.85). DeJong turned in the best time by a Mason swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing third (5:19.55).
The Patriots swept the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke against the Colonials. Junior
Amy Tansill claimed the top spot on the podium (1:06.25), while classmates
Sarah Brallier finished second (1:07.28) and
Allison Barahona placed third (1:08.55).
Junior
Dorothy Reilly also posted a stellar day in the pool, with two individual second-place finishes and an individual fourth-place finish. She was second in the 100-yard butterfly (58:38), with Albanese third (58.92) and senior
Elizabeth Kleveno fourth (1:00.29).Â
Reilly also registered a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.95) with sophomore
Christina McLemore placing third (2:13.18) and Kleveno fourth (2:13.70) in the event. Reilly earned a fourth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.44).
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Brallier was second (2:23.72), Barahona finished third (2:24.46) and junior
Gretchen Roesel placed fourth (2:27.44). Brallier also claimed third place in the 400-yard IM (4:39.42), with Barahona taking fourth (4:43.26).
The Patriots had a strong day in the relay events. The combination of Fisher, Maurer, Tansill and Reilly combined for a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.89) to begin the day. Albanese, Fisher, Maurer and Williams placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.06).
Sophomore
Lydia Alexander finished second in the three-meter springboard diving event with a score of 226.05 and was fourth in the one-meter event with a score of 189.53. Sophomore
Melanie Howard-Hutton finished third in both the one-meter springboard (221.55) and three-meter event (214.20).
On the men's side, Mason swept the top three spots on the podium in the 400-yard IM. Junior
Steven Craig won the event (4:09.52), junior
Matthew Lynch was second (4:09.92) and freshman
Attila Kiss placed third (4:14.62).Â
Kiss posted a second place finish in both the 1,650-yard freestyle (16.07.69) and 500-yard freestyle (4:44.43). Craig was third in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16.18.81) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:44.63).
Lynch took first place in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.06) and was second in the 100-yard butterfly (51.30).
Senior
Jackson Hannam turned in a second place performance in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.50), with sophomore
Leonis Lau finishing fourth (1:00.05). Senior
Zepher Begnell touched the wall second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.50), while junior
Alec Morin was close behind in third (21.79).
Freshman
Ryan Donnelly claimed fourth place in both the 100-yard backstroke (54.56) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.51).
Mason took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The combination of senior
Evan Owens, junior
Alec Morin, freshman
Christopher Stankiewicz and Begnell won the event (1:25.78), while junior
Deion Dean, freshman
Nathanael Bennett, Hannam and Lau placed second (1:32.01).
Senior
Paul Helfgott was second in both the one-meter dive (324.45) and three-meter dive (321.68). Senior
Trevor Long was third in both events, with a score of 288.83 in the one-meter and a score of 306.98 in the three-meter springboard.
The Patriots take on La Salle on Monday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at Kirk Pool in Philadelphia, Pa.
