Fairfax, Va. - After sweeping last weekend with wins against two ranked opponents, George Mason University's men's volleyball team began the week with another sweep – redshirt junior outside hitter Jack Wilson and junior libero Johnny Gomez were named the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.

Both Wilson and Gomez had huge contributions to help Mason clinch a postseason berth last weekend, which came with a sweep over No. 15 Saint Francis on Friday and a comeback win against No. 9 Penn State on Saturday, the program's first win over the Nittany Lions in eight years. The successful weekend earned the Patriots the second seed in the EIVA Championship this week and shaped up a semi-final against Harvard on Thursday.

Wilson made some big plays against the Red Flash and registered 2 kills on 1.000 hitting and an ace in crucial moments of the match. The following night, head coach Jay Hosack called on the Midlothian, Va. native earlier in the match and he started in three of the four sets, all of which went in Mason's favor after Penn State had edged the Patriots in the first set. Wilson accumulated 26 kills on a .340 hitting performance, 2 service aces and took part in 2 of Mason's 13 team blocks on Saturday night, including the one that settled the match at 29-27 in the fourth set.

Gomez was the rock in Mason's defense in both matches and combined for 30 digs during the weekend. Saturday's stellar 20-dig performance was a career-high for the libero and extended his double-digit-dig streak to six matches. After the big weekend, Gomez now leads the country with 2.99 digs per set. He also added 4 assists over the course of the weekend, one of them by setting up Wilson for a back-row attack on an awkward play that turned out to be a set point for Mason in the third set against Penn State.

Gomez and Wilson are the fourth and fifth Mason players to earn an EIVA weekly award this season. The Patriots have now won six awards of such kind in 2016.
