Track and Field Sweeps Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship Team Titles

George Mason track and field swept the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships taking both the men's and women's team titles Sunday. The women took their second straight outdoor title with 176 points, 40 points ahead of second-place VCU (136). The men topped defending champion Rhode Island by a score of 190.5 to 166.5 to record their first ever A-10 title.  The women concluded the weekend with 18 podium finishes including seven Gold medals while the men finished with 19 podium finishes, including seven Gold medals.

Senior Amanda Denger was voted Female Field Athlete of the Year following strong performances in both the Heptathlon and the javelin. After earning Gold in Saturday afternoon's open javelin with a mark of 41.84, the fifth year senior from Nazareth, Pa. set a new personal record with 5,170 points in the Heptathlon to take first place. Freshman John Seals received Male Rookie of the Year following a career performance in the high jump.  The defending Indoor A-10 High Jump Champion took home the title once again with a personal record mark of 2.12m.  

Sophomore Bernard Freeman earned Male Track Athlete of the Year after helping earn 30 points for the Patriots. The sprinter from Raleigh, N.C. took home three Gold medals, including one individual and two relays, after finishing first in the 200m dash with a  time of 21.25 into a -1.8 wind  to earn his individual title. Freeman also helped the men's team repeat as A-10 Outdoor Champions in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Freeman anchored the 4x100m unit that also included sophomore Ayo Raymond and juniors Walter Mitchell and DaQuan Smalls, securing the top spot in the 4x100m with a time of 40.48. The Patriots closed out the weekend in style taking the men's 4x400m relay team including freshman Xavier King, Jr., Freeman, Smalls and junior Angel Coburn took first place with a time of 3:11.39, less than a second shy of the A-10 record (3:10.43) set in 1998.

NOTABLE RESULTS

 

  • Senior Shavon Briscoe finished the weekend with three medals, including the individual title in the women's 100m hurdles for the second straight year with a time of 13.71. Briscoe also medaled in the 400m hurdles, finishing second with a time of 1:00.31 followed by freshman Sommer Sharpe who set a personal record with a mark of 1:00.38 in third.
  • Jimi Tele won the men's triple jump, setting an A-10 and personal record with a mark of 15.25m.
  • Former George Mason women's basketball player, Talisha Watts, took first place in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.70m in just her fourth collegiate competition.
  • Junior Michelle Wallerstedt improved on her finish from 2014, taking first place in the women's discus with a distance of 47.14m.
  • Sophomore Nhautrey Brown took first place in the triple jump with a personal record mark of 12.75m.
  • Senior Anthony Williams defended his 110m hurdles title with a time of 14.37. Junior Teddy Murphy also medaled in the event, taking home the Bronze.
  • Ayo Raymond took the top spot in Sunday's 100m with a time of 10.96 in a -1.6 wind.
  • In addition to medals in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, DaQuan Smalls took home an individual Silver medal in the 100m dash (10.96) and a Bronze in the men's 200m dash (21.66, -1.8 wind).
  • Freshman Ashley Lucas set a personal record in the women's 100m dash, finishing third with a mark of 12.21. Senior Aneesha Scott took second in the event with a time of 12.17.
  • Senior Jasmine Robinson set a personal record in the women's 200m dash, finishing third with a time of 24.33 into a -1.4 wind.
  • The Patriots medaled in both the men's and women's 400m dash with freshman Taylor Sharpe taking second place in the women's race with a mark of 53.88 and classmate Xavier King, Jr. taking third in the men's with a time of 47.72.  
  • Both the women's 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay teams finished second. The 4x100m unit made up of Sharpe and seniors Aneesha Scott, Robinson and Briscoe finished with a time of 45.58. Sharpe and Robinson also competed in the 4x400m relay along with freshman Sharon Dorsey and sophomore Caela Williams, the team finished less than a second out of first place with a time of 3:41.66.
  • Following a Bronze in men's long jump Saturday, freshman Reashawn Bishop took third in the triple jump with a personal record mark of 14.89m.
  • Mason took home two more Silver medals in distance events Sunday with sophomore Steven Flynn taking second in the men's 1500m (3:48.65) and senior Bethany Sachtleben finishing second in the women's 5000m with a time of 16:45.73.
  • Head coach Andrew Gerard was voted men's and women's Coach of the Year following the meet. All awards were decided based on a vote from by the head coaches.

Next up, the Patriots will send over 30 qualifying athletes to the ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Championships from May 15-17 in Princeton, N.J.
