BRONX, NY – The George Mason baseball team (11-16, 3-5) trailed 5-0 through the first five inning but scored nine runs on eight hits in the top of the sixth on its way to a 10-6 win over Fordham (9-18, 1-4).
Fordham jumped out 1-0 in the top of the first and doubled its lead with a solo homerun from Matthew Kozuch with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Three more came across in the top of the fifth on two hits and one of two Mason errors in the game for the 5-0 lead.
Brett Kennedy controlled the game for Fordham through the first five innings as he struck out eight batters and allowed only two hits. He exited the game after five and one-thirds with four earned runs on seven hits in his sixth loss of the year (1-6)
Andrew Sable began the sixth with the first of his three singles and was replaced by Luke Willis on a fielders choice groundout. Michael Smith bunted a single down the third base line and Brandon Gum singled afterwards, scoring Willis and moving Smith to third on a hit and run. Kent Blackstone was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting up Brady Acker's RBI single that made the score 5-2.
Kalish singled in the next at bat to score two runners and bring the game to 5-4. Sable's second at bat in the inning was a hard chopper towards third that was unable to be handled, scoring Acker to tie the game. Willis and Smith each followed up with singles and Sable scored on a wild pitch to bring home nine runs on eight hits in the frame.
Kalish breezed through the next two innings, ending his day with seven innings pitched, two earned runs and nine strikeouts with two walks in his second victory of the season (2-3). He helped his own cause for a second time with an RBI double down the left field line in the top of the ninth that scored the 10th Mason run, ending his day 3-5 at the plate.
Tyler Tobin pitched the final two innings as he allowed one run on three hits, throwing 28 pitches.
The final game of the series is scheduled for noon on Saturday, April 4 at Houlihan Park.
