FAIRFAX, Va. – After three scoreless innings Canisius scored twice in the top of the fourth and held on for an 8-2 victory over the George Mason baseball team (15-20-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Golden Griffins pitcher Devon Stewart and Mason starter John Williams gave up a combined five hits through the first three innings however the scoreless game was over when Nick Capitano singled into right field with two outs, scoring two unearned runs off of Williams. His day would end after six and one-third innings with two earned runs on eight hits and two strikeouts in his fifth loss of 2015 (4-5).
Stewart lasted through the seventh, pitching seven and one-third innings as he also allowed two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts however had the run support for his fourth win of the year (4-5).
The Patriots brought the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two out double from Luke Willis that scored Tyler Nelin, who doubled with one out in the inning. Canisius brought its lead back to two in the top of the sixth with a solo homerun from Brett Siddall that went off of the scoreboard in right center field for the 3-1 lead. Siddall ended his day 3-4 with two RBI.
The Golden Griffins chipped in two runs in the seventh, two runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth for their eight in the game. The second and final run for Mason came in the bottom of the eighth when Willis, Michael Smith and Brandon Gum singled, singled and doubled with one out. Willis and Nelin each ended Saturday with two hits.
Evan Porcella recorded two outs in direct relief of Williams followed by two innings from Taylor Hunt and the final inning from Saul Aguilera. Canisius out-hit the Patriots 11-8 while Mason committed two errors that scored three runs.
The final game of the season between the two schools will take place on Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m.
