RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason baseball team (13-18-1, 4-7) had the series vs. VCU (19-14, 5-3) evened on Saturday as the Rams defeated the Patriots 9-1.
After a scoreless top half of the first inning the Rams began the scoring with a solo homerun to left field from Logan Farrar off of John Williams' first pitch of the game. Williams would exit the game with two outs in the second inning after allowing six runs to score on six singles in the bottom half. He struck out two and walked one in his time on the mound.
Tyler Kardas relieved Williams to get Mason out of the second and would end up pitching four innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits. Matt Davis added a solo homerun in the fourth inning for VCU and the Rams brought in one more after a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Mason scored its only run in the top of the eighth inning after Brandon Gum, Jake Kalish and Kent Blackstone all singled to lead off the top of the frame. Brady Acker grounded a ball to towards third which was enough to score Gum, making the score 9-1. Acker ended the day with two hits along with Kalish and Blackstone.
Riley Coverdale relieved Kardas and pitched one and one-third scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout before Taylor Hunt threw a perfect eighth. VCU out-hit the Patriots 11-9 in an error free game.
The series concludes and will be decided on Sunday, April 12 in a 5:30 p.m. contest at The Diamond.
