Lindsay Horton (3.80m) and Megann Kaiser (3.60m) took first and second respectively, in the pole vault as George Mason track and field opened its outdoor season Saturday at the Tribe Invitational hosted by William and Mary.
Horton and Kaiser led the Patriots as they took four of the top six spots in pole vault with Ashley Hinton and Shelby Garnand finishing fifth and sixth respectively.
Steven Flynn (1:55.06), Logan Miller (1:55.21) and Josh Parshall (1:56.77) swept the podium in the 800m run. Mason also took four of the top five spots in the 1500m run with Austin Savage (4:08.58) finishing first followed by Nathan Schulte (4:12.87) in second and Kenneth Valva (4:13.34) and Ryan McGreal (4:17.87) in fifth.
Flynn also finished second in the 3000m run in a time of 8:34.55. Savage, Schulte, Valva and McGreal compiled the 4x400m relay team to finish second in a time of 3:27.37. Robert Yu finished first in the pole vault amongst a field of five fellow Patriots with a mark of 4.55m.
Mason also had a contingent at the VCU Ram Invitational. Sommer Sharpe (1:02.93) led the way on the track with a first place finish in the 400m hurdles followed by Shavon Biscoe (1:04.51) in second.
Patriots took three of the top 10 spots in the 200m dash with Taylor Sharpe finishing second overall, and first amongst collegiate competition, with a time of 24.62 with Caela Williams (25.18) and Briana Hill (25.75) finishing fourth and eighth respectively. Deonna Diggs finished second overall and first amongst collegiate competitors in the 100m hurdles with a mark of 14.79. Rounding out the podium finishes on the track for the women, the 4x400m relay team of Sommer Sharpe, Williams, Briana Hill and Ashley Lucas finished third with a time of 4:00.28.
In the field events, Ashley Jean finished first in the triple jump with a personal record mark of 11.89m followed by Junei Mosley (11.49m) in second. Michelle Wallerstedt finished second in the discus (46.75) with Emily Muniz (39.62m) in fifth. Muniz also took second place in the hammer throw (46.23).
On the men's side, Ryan Williams led the way with a first place finish in the javelin with a distance of 50.34m. Michael Mingo-Dabney took fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.67 and Raeshawn Bishop finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.08m.
On the track, the Patriots took two of the top five spots in the 400m dash with DaQuan Smalls (49.75) finishing fourth followed by Walter Mitchell (50.18) in fifth. Bernard Freeman (21.89) took fourth overall and second amongst collegiate competitions in the 200m dash with Ayo Ramond finishing sixth in the 200m dash.
The Patriots continue their outdoor season next weekend at the Raleigh Relays.
