The Patriots managed to play only one game last week due to the weather, a 6-1 win over VCU that snapped the Rams' 8-game win streak. Mason is now 3-1 in conference play. Anthony Montefusco picked up his Atlantic 10-leading fifth with of the season in the victory, throwing eight innings with 1 ER and five K's. He leads the confrerence with 44 strikeouts and is first in allowing only six runs to score this season. As a staff, Mason still ranks 30th in the country with a 2.75 team ERA.
Left handed pitcher Jake Kalish is scheduled to make his first appearance since sitting out the second half of last season with an injury. The Shrewsbury, N.J. native posted a 1-1 record with a 3.52 ERA over 30.2 innings of work in 2013. Michael Bowie is scheduled to make his second start of the season in game two after bad weather left him unable to pitch against. Maryland last week. Josh Leemhuis and Brandon Gum come into the doubeleader with active 11 game hitting streaks.
Cornell is the second Ivy League opponent that the Patriots will face this season. Mason won two of three games over Brown in a mid-March series. Cornell is coming off its first Ivy League title last season and is currently 8-8 this season, 1-1 in conference play. The Big Red play a doubleheader with Harvard on Tuesday, April 1 before heading to Fairfax for the Wednesday matchup.
Through 16 games junior Ryan Karl is the man to watch on offense for the Big Red. He is second on the team with a .355 batting average and leads the squad and the conference with five homeruns and 18 RBI while slugging .710. JD Whetsel is another threat for Cornell, leading the team and IVY league with a .375 batting average and going 8-10 in stolen bases this season.
