Softball Picks up Another Win as the Mason Invitational Comes to an End

FAIRFAX, Virginia – The George Mason softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Mason Invitational.  The Patriots beat Cornell 5-1 and then lost to Monmouth 3-0.  The Patriots move to 4-8 on the season.  The Patriots finished the Mason Invitational with an impressive record of 4-2.

GMU vs Cornell:

The Mason offense opened up the day on a high note with eight hits and five runs. The Patriots were led by Brooke Blankenship, who finished the game going two for three with three runs scored and one RBI.  Casey Price also had a huge game, finishing with a team high two RBI on two hits.  The Patriots scored four of its five runs in the first and second inning.

Stephanie Maher picked up her first win of the season for the Patriots, pitching a complete game.  Maher only gave up five hits and one earned run in seven innings.

Alyson Onyon got the start for the Big Red.  However, things didn't go her way, finishing the game with five earned runs on eight hits.  Chloe Pendergast drove in the only run for Cornell, also going one for three in the game.

GMU vs Monmouth:

Anna Blessing got the start for the Green and Gold, however, Blessing picked up the loss despite pitching a complete game.  Blessing finished with eight hits on only two earned runs.

It looked like the Patriots were staging a comeback after Angela Maioran got a double in the fourth inning with two outs.  However, a quick ground out to the shortstop ended the inning.  Emily Simon, Brooke Blankenship, and Julia Czarnecki also finished the game with a hit.

Sydney Underhill pitched a complete game shutout for the Hawks, only giving up four hits.  Meanwhile, Kayleena Flores led Monmouth on offense, driving in both RBI for the Hawks.

Up Next: The Patriots travel to Longwood for a Wednesday afternoon double header starting at 3:30 p.m.  Then, The Green and Gold host the Cherry Blossom Classic this upcoming weekend from March 14-16.  Akron, Binghamton, and Colgate will all travel here for the tournament.
