FAIRFAX, Virginia – The George Mason Softball team picked up two more wins today against Monmouth and Cornell in the second day of the Mason Invitational. The Patriots offense dominated scoring 8 runs in both games, defeating Monmouth 8-2 in the first game and Cornell 8-2 in the second.
Game 1:
The Mason offense opened up the day on a high note with 8 hits and 7 RBI on 8 runs. The Patriots were lead by Brooke Blankenship and Heather Ferguson each going 2 for 4 with Blankenship scoring a run. Casey Price also had a big game picking up 3 RBI.
Casey Herring got the start for Mason, pitching five and a third innings giving up only 5 hits and 2 earned runs with 6 strikeouts. Stephanie Maher pitched the final one and two-thirds innings allowing only 1 hit and no runs.
The win takes the Patriots to 2-7, while the loss takes Monmouth to 2-4 on the season.
Game 2:
Sarah Kleinfelter got her first start of the season and got the complete game win with an impressive outing allowing only 5 hits, 2 runs, and 1 earned run. Mason's offense was in a rhythm all game with 10 hits and 6 RBI on the 8 runs.
8 different Patriots had a hit in this game lead by Julia Czarnecki and Brooke Blankenship with 2 hits a piece. Lauren McColgan had the play of the day with an inside the park home run in the fifth inning.
With the win Mason improved to 3-7 while the Big Red of Cornell fell to 2-5 with the loss.
