FAIRFAX, Virginia – The George Mason Softball Team got their first win of the season on Friday against the Big Red of Cornell. The Patriots beat Cornell 8-7 on a walk off single by Cori Prince. It was the Patriots second game of a doubleheader, with the first game resulting in a 6-1 loss to Monmouth.
Game 1:
The Patriots faced off against Monmouth for the opening game of The Mason Invitational. The game featured an impressive offensive performance by Monmouth's Shannon Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was 3-3 on the day with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
For the Patriots, Christina Gabriele, Sarah Kleinfelter, and Casey Herring combined to pitch six innings allowing seven hits and striking out four. On the offensive end, Mason finished with three hits. Cori Prince, Brooke Blankenship, and Angela Maioran all recorded one hit in the game.
Monmouth won the game 6-1 and improved their record to 2-3 while the Patriots fell to 0-7.
Game 2:
Cori Prince was the hero in Mason's first win of the season. With the game tied 7-7 in the bottom of the 7th, Prince knocked a single deep into right field to drive home Tiffany Webb for the game-winning run.
Anna Blessing started the game and pitched six and a third innings before being relieved by Casey Herring. Herring recorded two outs and got her first win of the season. Offensively, Mason totaled 13 hits. Emily Simon and Lauren McColgan went 3 for 4 in the game while Brooke Blankenship and Cori Prince had 2 RBI a piece.
It was a complete team effort and an all around impressive offensive showing. Mason's 8 runs marks season high this year. With the win Mason improved their record to 1-7, while Cornell dropped to 2-3.
Up Next: The Patriots continue the Mason Invitational at the George Mason Softball Complex tomorrow March 8th. Mason's first game of the will be against Monmouth at 10:00 AM.
