Wellington Sets School Record in Day One of CAA T&F Championships

TOWSON, Md. - Competing at day one of the Colonial Athletic Association Track and Field Championships, the George Mason squad took home one event title and saw one school record fall, while several individuals advanced to the finals of their respective events to be held on Saturday.

Jason Wellington broke the school record in the weight throw with a toss of 49.46, while finishing fifth in the event. The previous record was 48.59, set by Brandon Holmberg in 2010.

Highlighting the day was freshman Jasmine Moser, who won the women's pole vault with a height of 3.96m. It is the third-consecutive women's pole vault title for the Patriots at the meet, after Mandissa Marshall captured the title the past two seasons.

Below is a rundown of each event and its participants from Mason at the meet today.

WOMEN
100m Prelims
Three Patriots competed in the women's 100m dash prelims, led by Katea Jemmott who won the first heat and placed third in a time of 12.02. Aneesha Scott also advanced to the finals with the sixth-fastest prelim time of 12.26. Crystalyne Clark did not advance to the finals after finishing 10th in 12.50.

200m Prelims
Aneesha Scott and Jasmine Robinson both advanced out of Friday's prelims of the 200m. Scott won heat one and had the second fastest overall time and  of 23.91, a PR and 10th-fastest time in program history, while Jasmine Robinson had the seventh fastest time of the day, 25.04. Sarah Weber (25.50, 15th) and Crystalyne Clark (26.30, 22nd) also competed in the event but did not advance to the finals.

400m Prelims
Mason took the top two spots in the women's 400m dash as Daianna Barron and Cierra McGee both finished in a time of 54.33. Barron won heat two, while McGee took the top spot in heat three. Sarah Weber also ran the event but did not advance to the finals after finishing 15th in a time of 58.89.

800m Prelims
The lone Patriot to run in the 800m prelims, Heather Selheimer crossed the finish line in 2:18.42 to place 14th. She did not advance to Saturday's finals.

5000m
Kicking off the evening distance events at Unitas Stadium, Victoria Doss placed 14th in the 5000m , crossing the finish line in 20:14.16.

100m Hurdles Prelims
Two Mason hurdlers advanced to Saturday's finals of the 100m hurdles. Shavon Briscoe won the second heat in 14.02, the second-fastest time on the day. Jasmine Robinson also moved on with a time of 14.63, the sixth-fastest overall.

400m Hurdles Prelims
Another top time for the women's team on Friday came in the prelims of the 400m hurdles, as Taylor Wheaton won the third heat with the fastest overall time, 59.78. Shavon Briscoe was right on her heels, winning the first heat with the second-fastest overall time of 1:00.17 (10th fastest in program history, PR), while Kristin Bethel finished behind Briscoe in heat one with the fourth-fastest overall time and a PR, 1:02.17. Briscoe and Bethel's times both qualified them for the ECAC Championships.

Javelin
The top Mason finisher in the javelin was Jasmine Moser, placing eighth with a PR distance of 37.0 (10th-best in school history). Emily Muniz finished 12th overall with a throw of 29.67m.

Hammer Throw
Meredith Oare and Haley Hale both took part in the women's weight throw, as Oare placed 10th with a season-best distance of 42.15m and Hale finished 15th after a toss of 38.91m.

Long Jump
Katea Jemmott, the lone Patriot to compete in the women's long jump, finished in 13th with a leap of 5.09m.

Pole Vault
Taking home the first CAA individual title of the meet for the Patriots, Jasmine Moser won the women's pole vault with a height of 3.96m for the Patriots' third-consecutive title in the event. Caitlin Eberly and Summer Shepherd finished in a tie for eighth place with a height of 3.27m, while Lindsay Horton finished 12th (3.27m) and Megann Kaiser placed 14th (3.12m).

MEN
100m Prelims
Advancing to Saturday's finals of the 100m, DaQuan Smalls posted the seventh-fastest time of the day after crossing the finish line with a PR of 11.05.

200m Prelims
A quartet of Patriots punched their tickets to the 200m finals on Saturday. David Verburg won heat two with the fastest time of the day and a PR, 20.76 (T-5th in program history), and Adrian Vaughn won the first heat and placed second overall in 21.39. DaQuan Smalls ran the fourth fastest time (21.95) while Angel Coburn had the sixth-fastest time (22.03, PR).

400m Prelims
Mason had the top three times in the men's 400m prelims, as David Verburg continued his quest for is fourth-consecutive 400m CAA title posting the top prelim time after winning heat two in 45.67. Adrian Vaughn won the first heat with the second-fastest time of 47.90, and Angel Coburn followed right behind with a PR time of 48.66. John Jones also competed in the event but just missed advancing to the finals after finishing ninth in 49.91.

800m Prelims
Two Patriots emerged from the 800m prelims to compete in Saturday's finals. Tyler Golden finished third and Cody Raphael fourth with times of 1:54.39 and 1:55.39, respectively. David Rushing (1:55.92, 9th), Steven Mitchell (1:57.17, 11th) and Ryan McGreal (1:57.99, 13th) did not advance to the finals.

5000m
Running under the lights, Kieran Hennessy finished eighth in the 5000m in 15:26.97, while James Luehrs placed 10th after crossing the finish line in 15:37.23.

10000m
In the final event of the first day of competition, Everett Hackett led the Patriots in the 10000m after he finished fifth in a time of 31:07.85. Taylor Tornino finished in eighth (31:32.43), Andrew Pitts in 10th (32:19.96) and Joshua Schlickenmeyer in 11th (33:58.88, PR) to round out the field.

Hammer Throw
Competing in the men's hammer throw, Jason Wellington set a school record, PR and placed fifth in the event with a toss of 49.46m. Kirk Nguyen also competed, but fouled out.

Long Jump
In his first CAA meet, Byron Sintim made it to the podium with a third-place finish in the long jump, posting a PR distance of 7.18m. Travaughn Baker-Johnson placed 10th with a jump of 6.27m, while Justin Little finished 11th with a distance of 5.87m.

Pole Vault
In the men's pole vault, Patrick Dietrick and Sean Daugherty finished at 4.50m, with Dietrick edging Daugherty in a jump-off to place fourth. Josh Trikakis finished seventh and Zachary Lawson eighth with a height of 4.35m, while Wes Sun no heighted on the day.

Decathlon
Gustavo Osorio leads the decathlon field after day one of the event, totaling 3,298 points. Osorio won the long jump (6.53m), high jump (1.72m) and 100m (11.83), while finishing second in both the shot put (11.84m) and 400m (51.39).

Kenzell Crawford currently stands third in the decathlon with 2,895 points. Crawford placed second in the high jump (1.66m), third in the long jump (6.22m) and shot put (11.40m), and fourth in the 100m (12.38) and 400m (54.97).
