RICHMOND, Va. - Marking its third double play of the game,
the George Mason baseball team turned two in the bottom of the ninth to end the
game and complete a 4-2 victory over VCU on Sunday afternoon at the Diamond,
finishing a three-game sweep of the Rams in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The sweep was the first in CAA play for Mason since the 2010
season when they took three against the University of Delaware. It was also the
first sweep of VCU since a doubleheader series during the 2008 campaign.
VCU took its first lead of the series in the first inning,
as outfielder Bill Cullen started the game with a triple before crossing home
plate on a an RBI groundout by second baseman Jordan Weymouth for a 1-0 Rams
lead.
Timely two-out hitting and run production gave Mason the
lead in the top of the third inning. With two outs and runners on second and
third, the Patriots registered a run on a wild pitch to tie the game, 1-1.
Mason then put together three-consecutive RBI hits, as senior shortstop Brig
Tison singled to right, senior outfielder Dan Schafferman doubled down the
right field line and senior designated hitter Zack Helgeson singled up the
middle, giving the Patriots a 4-1 advantage.
Threatening to score in the home half of the fifth inning,
VCU put runners on second and third for Cullen, who reached on a fielder's
choice that caught a Ram on the way home and Mason starter A.J. Johnson got
Weymouth to ground out to end the inning.
VCU loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth innings but
was able to only bring in one run on a sacrifice fly by Cullen in the seventh. The
Rams also had a baserunner in the ninth as outfielder Paul Nice led off the
inning with a single. However, Mason reliever Jake Kalish got the next batter
to strikeout swinging, setting the stage for the game-ending double play to
claim the series sweep and improve the Patriots to 22-11 overall and 9-6 in CAA
play.
Tison and Schafferman led the Patriots at the plate, as both
went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Johnson (4-4) threw 6.1 strong innings, giving up two runs
on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kalish earned his fifth save of the
season in 2.2 innings of relief, scattering two hits with three strikeouts.
VCU's Nice was the only Ram to record multiple hits with a
2-for-2 showing at the plate. Starter Heath Dwyer (3-2) took the loss after
going 5.0 innings and giving up four runs on four hits.
The Patriots return to action on Wednesday, traveling to
Navy for a 3:00 pm contest.
