Men's Volleyball Hosts Two EIVA Matches over the Weekend

Men's volleyball continues EIVA conference play with matches against Harvard and Sacred Heart this weekend at the RAC.

The Patriots snapped a five-game losing streak on Monday, defeating Grand Canyon, 3-1. Junior outside hitter Mark Jones posted a game-high 16 kills, while sophomore setter Pete Cuppernull dished out a game-high 40 assists. Junior middle blocker Piotr Dabrowski finished with a game-high seven blocks (3 BS, 4 BA).

For the season, Dabrowski ranks seventh nationally and second in the conference with an average of 1.42 blocks/set, while the team ranks ninth nationally and second in the conference averaging 2.67 blocks/set. Offensively, Jones is 12th in the nation and third in the EIVA with 3.74 kills/set.

Notes: The Crimson dropped a 3-0 decision to the Patriots earlier this season in Cambridge, only one of their two losses this season. Mason junior outside hitter finished with a game-high 16 kills, followed by 11 kills from Mark Jones. Cuppernull dished out a game-high 35 assists, while Dabrowski had eight blocks. Harvard was led by 11 kills from senior outside hitter Matt Jones, 34 assists by junior setter Rob Lothman and two blocks apiece from sophomore middle blockerWill Chambers and Matt Jones.

HU's other loss of the season came at the hands of Penn State (3-0) on February 17, and since then the squad has rattled off three-consecutive wins. As a team, the Crimson rank fourth nationally in kills per set (13.56, 1st conference) and fifth nationally with a .343 hitting percentage (second conference). Matt Jones stands fourth in the nation in kills per set (4.14, 1st conference) and seventh nationally in hitting percentage (.360, 4th conference). Also joining Jones in the national rankings is freshman outside hiter DJ White in hitting percentage (.357, 8th nationally, 5th conference) and freshman middle hitter Caleb Zimmick in blocks (1.26 b/s, 9th nationally, 3rd conference).

Notes: Sacred Heart defeated Mason 3-2 earlier this season in Fairfield. The Pioneers won the first set, but Mason rallied to win the second and third sets before falling in the fourth and fifth sets. Both teams struggled hitting, as Mason hit just .099 and Sacred Heart was limited to .171. The Patriots were led by 10 kills from Jones, while Cuppernull had 36 assists and Dabrowski chipped in a game-high 10 blocks. Sophomore right side Nick Hunt led the Pioneers with a game-high 23 kills and freshman setter John Lutjen added a game-high 40 assists.

Since their win over Mason, the Pioneers have dropped four-consecutive matches, all to EIVA opponents (Saint Francis, Penn State, NJIT, Harvard). Individually, Hunt currently stands fifth nationally and second in the EIVA with an average of 4.06 kills/set, while junior libero Adrian Fernandez ranks eighth in the nation and second in the conference averaging 2.31 digs/set.
