MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - An RBI single in the bottom of the third by sophomore outfielder Blaise Fernandez proved to be all the offense the George Mason baseball team needed as it defeated West Virginia, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Coastal Field.

With the win, the Patriots (4-3) finished their weekend at the Coastal Carolina Baseball at the Beach Tournament with a 3-1 record, rebounding from a loss on Friday to N.C. State with consecutive wins over Iowa, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

In Mason's half of the third inning, senior third baseman Brig Tison doubled down the right field line with one out to put himself in scoring position. After senior outfielder Dan Schafferman flied out to right field, Fernandez ripped a hit down the right field line, scoring Tison from second base. The Patriots put another runner in scoring position as Fernandez advanced to second on a wild pitch, but sophomore first baseman Anthony Montefusco ended the inning when he struck out, giving Mason the 1-0 lead.

WVU threatened in the top of the seventh, as the Mountaineers loaded the bases with two outs. However, Mason sophomore reliever Jake Kalish worked out of the jam, forcing WVU's (3-4) catcher Max Nogay to fly out to center.

Freshman John Williams (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate start, working 5.0 innings with two hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Kalish took home his first save of the season throwing 4.0 innings of relief, giving up just two hits with a strikeout

Eric Hinkle (0-1) took the loss for WVU, lasting 4.0 innings and giving up one earned run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Reliever Dan Dierdorff worked 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing just one hit.

The Patriots return to the diamond on Wednesday, hosting Coppin State at 2:30 pm.
