Baseball Tabbed to Finish Sixth in CAA

The George Mason baseball team will travel to Myrtle Beach this weekend, taking part in the Coastal Carolina Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach Tournament. The Patriots will face opponents from the ACC, Big Ten and Big East conferences, playing N.C. State, Iowa, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Mason is currently 1-2 on the season, winning its season opener against Appalachian State before being swept by Elon in a doubleheader as part of the Elon Tournament last weekend.


MASON (1-2) vs. N.C. STATE (3-1)

Pitching
Mason - Senior RHP A.J. Johnson (0-1)
N.C. State - Sophomore RHP Anthony Tzarntzis (0-0)

Notes: The Wolfpack is 3-1 overall, most recently defeating UNC Wilmington, 10-0, on Tuesday afternoon. N.C. State also defeated Marshall and Youngstown State last weekend at home, while falling to Wright State in 11 innings.

Johnson started the first game of the doubleheader against Elon last weekend, taking the loss in a 4-1 game. He threw 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out four.

Tzarntzis was the starting pitcher for the Wolfpack in their 11-inning affair with Wright State last Saturday. He worked 4.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out eight, including seven over the first three innings.

Notes: Early in the season the Hawkeyes are 1-2, defeating Pittsburgh to open its season before falling to Notre Dame and West Virginia as part of the Big Ten/Big East Challenge last weekend in Florida. Iowa will face host Coastal Carolina on Friday before playing Mason on Saturday.

Throwing for Mason will be senior RHP Ryan Pfaeffle, who was the starter in Mason's 4-3 loss to Elon last Saturday (no decision). He threw 6.0 innings, scattering nine hits while not allowing a run and striking out three.  

Dermody didn't earn a decision as the starting pitcher a week ago when the Hawkeyes dropped a 5-2 decision to Notre Dame. He worked 4.2 innings for Iowa, allowing four hits and one earned run while issuing six walks and three strikeouts.


MASON vs. VIRGINIA TECH

When: Saturday, 5:00 pm
Where: BB&T Coastal Field, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Va. Tech - Senior RHP Marc Zecchino (1-0)

Notes: The Hokies started their season at the Kennesaw State Tournament, going 3-1 with two wins over Bradley while splitting a pair with host Kennesaw State. At this weekend's tournament, Va. Tech will face West Virginia and Coastal Carolina before playing the Patriots.

Mason pitcher Anthony Montefusco had a strong performance to start the season after missing the 2011 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Montefusco didn't earn a decision, but threw 6.0 innings, scattering six hits while giving up one earned run, walking one and striking out six.

Zecchino earned the win for the Hokies as they defeated Bradley, 11-1, last Saturday. Starting the game he threw 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out six.

MASON vs. WEST VIRGINIA

Where: BB&T Coastal Field, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

West Virginia - Senior LHP Eric Hinkle (0-0)

Notes: West Virginia owns a 3-1 record after opening weekend. The Mountaineers took part in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge, earning wins over Northwestern, Penn State and Iowa while falling to Michigan State a week ago in Florida. WVU will face Virginia Tech and N.C. State before closing the weekend tournament against Mason on Sunday.

Throwing for Mason will be true freshman John Williams. Appearing in relief for the Patriots against Elon last weekend, Williams worked 3.0 scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out three.

Hinkle started WVU's game against Iowa last Sunday, throwing 4.2 innings with five hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts in a no-decision appearance.
