FAIRFAX, Va. - Behind goals from Casey Vornadore and Liz
Hodges, the George Mason women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the
season defeating Saint Francis 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
Mason posted three unanswered goals, including one off the foot of a Saint
Francis defender, in the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit.
The Patriots outshot the Red Flash 22-6, led by Nicole Clark's
five attempts, and put nine shots on goal. Hodges put three shots on frame,
while Zoe Doherty added two. Alex Bodenschatz and Lyndse Hokanson split time in
the net and combined for two saves.
The Red Flash (3-4) scored five minutes into the second half to
take a 1-0 lead. A blocked Ellie Gavin shot bounced back out to the sophomore
as Gavin was able to punch it to the right of the keeper in the 49th
minute.
Mason (1-3-2) scored the equalizer in the 61st minute
when Nicole Clark passed it off to her left to a sweeping Vornadore. The sophomore
was able to finish the play sending it past the keeper from 16-yards out.
The Patriots looked to take the advantage four minutes later
when Hodges delivered a pass out to Tiana Kallenberger and the Patriot drilled
a shot from 10-yards out that hit the post high. After three consecutive attempts,
Mason took the lead on a Hodges goal in the 67th minute. From the
right side, Zania Barnum slipped a pass over to Hodges in the middle of the box
as the freshman knocked it in from five-yards out for her first collegiate career
goal.
The Patriots took its final 3-1 lead on a Saint Francis own
goal. Hodges was carrying the ball on the near side, sent a pass to the middle
as Saint Francis' Alecia McNiff slid in to deflect the pass, but instead,
sailed it into the right side of the net in the 81st minute.
Mason came out in the first half exploding, rattling off 10
shots to the Red Flash's two, but could not find the back of the net as the
teams stood scoreless at intermission. Saint Francis' best scoring opportunity of
the half occurred in the 17th minute when Bodenschatz approached Tesa
McKibben on the right side. McKibben slipped around the keeper, but Kelly Thomas
was in the net to deflect the attempt. The Red Flash put together another
scoring chance in the 38th minute as Laura Stayrook carried the ball
down the near side and Abby Zielinski slid to punch the ball
out-of-bounds resulting in a corner kick for Saint Francis. Gavin took the corner
that sailed to the middle of the net as McNiff headed it just high.
With four minutes remaining in the half, the Patriots posed
a threat as Vornadore carried the ball down the far side and passed it off to
Kelly Pizzingrilli in the middle of the box. The freshman slipped it out to Kallenberger
in front of the net as the junior's shot went wide right and the teams entered
intermission scoreless.
George Mason returns to the field welcoming Howard
to George Mason Stadium on Friday, September 16 at 6 p.m. as part of a

homestand on Sunday facing Penn at 2 p.m.
