Rachaunn
Ruffin entered February not having competed for the George Mason track and
field team. But after just one meet, he has already qualified for two events at
next month's IC4A Championships.
Ruffin
competed in the championship 60-meters on Friday, qualifying with the lone
sub-7.00 performance by a Patriot this season. On Saturday, he competed in the
championship 200-meters and was the top Patriot finisher as he became the
fourth Patriot to qualify for the IC4A in that event. He ran a time of 21.85.
Victoria
Samyn was the other Patriot to reach a qualifying mark as she finished sixth in
the college mile to clinch a spot in the ECAC meet. She ran the mile in
4:58.86. Laura Sinclair, Samantha Fickel and Kimmy Moss also competed in the
event.
Other members
of the women's track and field team to compete on Saturday were Taren Henry and
Dominique Graham finishing fifth and sixth in the eastern high jump as the both
cleared 1.60 meters; Shantel Miles, Crystal Clark, Daianna Barron and Graham were
10th in the college 4X400 in 3:53.23; and Grace Mavugara was 11th
in the triple jump with a leap of 12.52 meters
The men's
team saw Travaughn Baker-Johnson finish third in the college 200 meters in
22.17, Wesley Sun finish tied for fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.90
meters, and David Wellington clearing the high jump with a height of 1.94
meters. Lavell Handy was 10th in the triple jump with a leap of
15.09 meters while the 4X800 and 4X400 teams were seventh and eighth,
respectively.
Other
members of the men's team to compete were Bullard and Nick Vaughn in the
championship 200 meters, where they finished 18th and 19th,
respectively, with times of 21.93 and 22.02, and Everett Hackett and Daniel
Callan, who were 17th and 31st respectively in the
college mile with times of 4:16.89 and 4:19.41.
The IC4A
and ECAC Championships will be contested in four weeks. Last year the men's
team was second and the women's team was third. So far the men have qualified
in 25 individuals and three relay teams while the women have qualified seven
individuals and three relay teams.
