Michael Johnson Classic Results
JMU Track & Field Invitational Results
The George Mason track and field team was in action this weekend in three separate meets and had a successful bout of competition at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton, the Michael Johnson Classic hosted by Baylor, and the JMU Track and Field Invitational.
While the Patriots had a number of athletes who met or surpassed their previously-qualified IC4A/ECAC marks, Mason added a total of five new qualifiers.
At Princeton's meet, Anthony LaMastro earned a spot in the IC4A Championships which will take place at the same track next month as he completed the 1,500-meter run in 3:49.13. Joining him with an ECAC mark at the Larry Ellis Invitational was Sandy Castro, as she ran the 5,000-meter run in an ECAC-qualifying time of 17:12.13, good for sixth place.
In Texas, the Patriots saw a number of standout performances including Nick Vaughn's time of 47.36 in the 400-meter dash, his first time running the event and one of five IC4A-qualifying times by Patriot runners in that event but the lone new qualification. Mason recorded the top-three finishes including David Verburg's first-place time of 47.06, a personal record. Third-place finisher George Empty (47.69) qualified for the USATF Junior Championships with his mark, a personal best.
Highlighting the women's action was the 4x100-meter women's relay of Crystal Clark, Cierra McGee, Marie Fields and Tiara Swindell which ran in 45.90, improving on their previous ECAC-qualifying mark. In the 400-meter dash, Swindell ran a personal best time of 54.00 and bettered her already ninth-best time in the event in school history. McGee's time of 54.33 places her 10th on the all-time performance list in the 400.
Finally, in Harrisonburg, the Patriots tacked on another new ECAC berth as Jennifer Bailey's distance of 42.72 meters in the discus gave her a spot in next month's championships, her first such qualification of the season.

The Patriots return to action next weekend when they travel to Franklin Field in Philadelphia for the nationally-renowned Penn Relays.
