WILLEBROEK, Belgium - Former George Mason men's basketball great Will Thomas was rewarded for an outstanding season with the Belgacom Liège Basket team of Basketball League Belgium earlier this week when he was recognized as the league's Most Valuable Player and winner of the Star of the Coaches Award.

Thomas, a 2008 graduate of George Mason who was named one of the 25 greatest players in Colonial Athletic Association history, finished first in the regular season standings and earned home court advantage throughout the BLB playoffs. He is in his second season with Liège, one of nine teams in Belgium's top professional basketball league.

This year, Thomas leads all BLB players with an average of nine rebounds per game to go with 14.9 points in better than 33 minutes of action per game. He has started all 32 games for Liège, shooting 59 percent from the field and contributing 64 steals and 27 assists. Thomas has scored in double figures 25 times this season, including a season-high 31 points in a win over Optima Gent on April 2.

As recently as nine days ago, Thomas was earning recognition for his play when Eurobasket.com recognized the 6'7" forward/center with its Player of the Week award.

One of four Patriots selected to the CAA Men's Basketball Silver Anniversary Team, Thomas was selected to the 2005 CAA All-Rookie Team and then was chosen to the CAA All-Defensive squad each of the next three seasons. He was an All-CAA selection as a junior and a senior and he was the runner-up in 2008 for both the CAA Player of the Year and CAA Defensive Player of the Year awards. He was selected to the NABC All-District team and he led the Patriots to the 2008 CAA title. As a sophomore, Thomas was a starter on the team that went to the Final Four and he was named the Chevrolet Player of the Game twice by CBS in Mason's four NCAA Tournament victories.

He is Mason's all-time leader in games played, games started, minutes played and field-goal percentage and he holds the school's single-season record for rebounds. He also is Mason's record holder for consecutive games started and played and he finished his career top 10 in points, rebounds, field-goal percentage, steals and blocks.
