Megan Shifflett Bachmann, a three-time NCAA Champion and decorated defensive specialist, was named the eighth head coach in George Mason University women's volleyball history on July 7, 2022.
Since taking the helm, Shifflett Bachmann has steadily elevated the program, increasing its win totals each season. In 2024, she led the Patriots to their highest single-season win total since 2010. Under her leadership, George Mason has also produced one All-Atlantic 10 selection and two All-Rookie Team honorees, marking a new era of player development and competitiveness within the program.
A native of Northern Virginia and Langley High School alum, Shifflett Bachmann brings a proven track record of success and leadership. Prior to George Mason, she served as an assistant coach at Towson University for four years, where she helped guide the Tigers to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2019–2021) and three straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season championships. At Towson, she worked closely with defensive specialists and liberos, turning the Tigers into a top ranked team in digs in the CAA.Â
Shifflett Bachmann’s coaching career spans NCAA Division I and II programs, including impactful roles at the U.S. Naval Academy and Western Oregon University, where she also served as interim head coach. At Navy, she helped the Mids reach the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in over a decade and coached a libero to a school-record 46 digs in a single match.
As a player, Shifflett Bachmann was part of Penn State’s volleyball dynasty, helping the Nittany Lions capture three straight NCAA National Championships from 2008 to 2010. She appeared in 88 matches over her career and was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. She holds a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Penn State and a master's degree in education from Durham University (UK), where she researched the impact of physical education on students with ADHD.
