Jay Hosack was announced as the fifth head men’s volleyball coach in Mason history on August 25, 2015. Entering his tenth season at the helm in 2025, Hosack has transformed the Patriots into a perennial power in the EIVA, guiding the program to consistent national contention, multiple championship appearances, and a strong culture of academic and athletic excellence.

In his first season leading the Green & Gold, Hosack made history by capturing the 2016 EIVA Championship, Mason’s first since 1988, and earning the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth in nearly three decades. The Patriots finished the year ranked No. 11 in the AVCA national poll, while Hosack was honored as the 2016 Bob Sweeney EIVA Coach of the Year. He won the award again in 2018 after guiding Mason to a program-best 13-1 conference record, its first EIVA regular-season title in the modern era, and the longest conference winning streak in school history.

The Patriots continued to succeed under Hosack’s leadership. In 2019, Mason posted a 17-9 record and reached their best regular-season start since 2006. The 2020 season saw the Patriots Ranked No. 15 nationally before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the setback, Mason returned to championship contention in 2021, advancing to the EIVA Championship Final behind standout seasons from Hayden Wagner and Brad Creamer, both AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions.

Mason remained a postseason fixture in subsequent years. The Patriots reached the EIVA semifinals in 2022 and 2023, highlighted by the emergence of rising star Omar Hoyos, who earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors and All-EIVA recognition. In 2024, Mason returned to the EIVA Championship match for the first time since 2016, finishing 18-10 overall and consistently ranked in the National Top 20. Hoyos earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention status, while Paul Wyszynski and Jack Bolz also garnered All-EIVA and All-Tournament honors.

The momentum carried into 2025, as Mason earned its third straight EIVA semifinal appearance with a 16-13 overall record. Freshman standout Alexander Lillie established himself as one of the nation’s top blockers, earning All-EIVA First Team honors after leading the conference in blocks per set and hitting percentage. He was joined by multiple teammates on All-EIVA and Academic All-EIVA teams, underscoring Hosack’s commitment to developing both athletic and academic champions.

Off the court, Hosack has built a model program of academic excellence. The Patriots have earned the prestigious AVCA Team Academic Award four times during his tenure (2020, 2023, 2024, 2025), including back-to-back honors in 2024 and 2025. The team posted a collective 3.32 GPA in 2025, reflecting Hosack’s complete vision of developing well-rounded student-athletes.

Across his tenure, Hosack has coached multiple AVCA All-Americans, EIVA major award winners, and dozens of All-EIVA honorees. More importantly, he has established George Mason as a consistent contender and a destination for top recruits seeking national-level competition and a championship culture.
Prior to arriving at Mason, Hosack brought more than 25 years of collegiate and international coaching experience, including six seasons as an assistant at Penn State, where he helped lead the Nittany Lions to six conference titles and six NCAA Final Four appearances. He has also coached extensively with USA Volleyball, highlighted by his role as head coach of the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team that captured gold at the 2016 NORCECA Championship.

A former standout player at UC Santa Cruz, Hosack earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from UCSC and a master’s in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University (Calif.).
