2016: Took part in 13 matches, playing in 26 sets…Had three kills, two digs and an ace against Pfeiffer (2/5)…Picked up five kills, one ace and a dig against Coker (2/12)…Posted two block assists and two kills against Lees-McRae (2/13)…At Sacred Heart (4/1), recorded five kills, season-high three block assists, three aces, two digs and two assists…Posted a season-high six kills in following match at Sacred Heart (4/2).
Prep: Upon committing to Mason after winning three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards in four varsity seasons with Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Bryant Ekstein became the first player in the Eagles’ history to play Div.I volleyball. Strong performances in his senior year earned the two-season Eagles’ captain spots on the First Team All-Beach District, the All-Tidewater First Team, and the USA Volleyball Youth National Team, with which he won the 2014 NORCECA Under-19 Championship. At the club level, Ekstein represented the local Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club. His athletic achievements extended to swimming and diving – two years with Landstown’s varsity team and two years with a club team – and baseball – one season with the Eagles’ junior varsity team and nine seasons at the club level.
Personal: Ekstein learned hardship at young age when he, parents Keith and Yasuko Ekstein, and his two older sisters were forced to relocate to Virginia from native New Orleans, La. due to Hurricane Katrina. After being selected in the Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow program in high school two years in a row, Ekstein now pursues a degree in Education with a focus in Biology at Mason. The former Tri-M Musical Honor Society member enjoys playing various instruments in his free time – piano, cello, and ukulele, as well as going to the beach.
