Oliver Weiss enters the fall 2021 season in his second year with the Patriots. He joined Elmar Bolowich’s staff in February 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and helped reform alumni relations and fund-raising, while also supporting on-field training.
For the 2021-22 season, Weiss will be responsible for recruiting, coaching, team and game management, alumni relations, fund-raising, and community outreach projects.
A former collegiate assistant and head coach, Weiss worked under Bolowich at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. During his three-year span with the Tar Heels (1999-2002), UNC won an ACC title and an NCAA championship.
Weiss credits Bolowich for jump starting his coaching career.
“Elmar is just a great person to work for,” Weiss said. “His reputation as one of the best coaches and mentors in college soccer is undisputed. He cares about his players, teams, and staff. He holds you accountable and helps you gain the confidence and knowledge to be successful. I look forward to helping Elmar be successful at George Mason.”
Weiss’s previous collegiate coaching experience spanned 14 years. He started as an assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire in 1995, followed by a three-year stint at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., under legendary soccer coach, Al Albert. Weiss became the head coach at Virginia Tech in 2002 and, in 7 years, transformed the Hokies into a national contender with four NCAA tournaments, including the program’s only College Cup appearance in 2007.
Weiss lives in Fairfax with his wife, Peggy, an associate professor of Special Education at George Mason, and his two children, Samantha and Max.
