Serge Clement enters his first season as an assistant coach for the George Mason University men’s basketball staff.
Clement joins the George Mason Patriots after spending three seasons as an assistant coach with the Hofstra University’s men’s basketball program.
Recognized by multiple outlets as one of the preeminent mid-major assistants in the nation, Clement comes to Fairfax after leading Hofstra to three-straight 20+ win seasons, including a 2023 Coastal Athletic Conference regular season championship.
Clement earned acclaim in 2022, 2023, and 2024 as part of the Silver Waves Media “Rising Stars: Impactful Men's Mid Major Assistants” list. Overall, for the past four years, he has been a four-time Silver Waves Media honoree and a four-time Top Connect attendee.
Clement guided Hofstra during one of the most successful three-year runs in program history.
In 2021-22, the Pride won 21 games, then followed up that season with a 25-victory campaign in 2022-23, which included a regular season CAA title. The Pride advanced to the second round of the NIT on the strength of a first-round victory at Rutgers. This past season, Hofstra won 20 games and advanced to the CAA semifinals. Also, in 2023-24, the Pride earned its third Top-3 finish and won 20 games for the third-straight season.
Also, during his tenure at Hofstra, the Pride also earned victories over two nationally ranked opponents. Hofstra defeated #24 Arkansas in 2021-22, then knocked off #18 Charleston in 2022-23.
Under Clement’s leadership and tutelage, he coached and developed six players who received conference recognition including two-time CAA Player of the Year and two-time First Team All Conference Aaron Estrada (2021, 2022) as well as 2024 CAA Player of the Year Tyler Thomas. In 2021, Clement coached and developed CAA Sixth Man of Year Zach Cooks and CAA Third Team All Conference Jalen Ray. Most recently, during the 2023-2024 season, he coached and developed CAA Second Team All Conference Darlinstone Dubar and CAA All Defensive Team Jaquan Carlos.
Prior to his time with the Pride, Clement coached for three seasons at Marist. As an assistant, Clement served as the program’s lead recruiter and assisted in all aspects of managing the program. In 2020-21, the Red Foxes had their first winning season in 13 years and best conference finish in 14 seasons. During that same season, Marist finished above .500 for the first time in 19 years, and the Red Foxes’ 6-1 start was their best in 22 years.
While at Marist, Clement coached and developed two MAAC All Conference Players, Brian Parker and Ricardo Wright, both Second Team honorees.
In 2020, Clement was named as a Top-5 Assistant Coach in the MAAC by Jeff Goodman. In 2019, he was selected to join fellow industry peers in Tampa, Florida, for the NCAA Basketball Coaches Academy.
From 2013 to 2018, Clement worked as an assistant coach at Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, New Jersey. Throughout his tenure, the Peacocks achieved significant success, including capturing the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament title and making a pair of MAAC semifinal appearances. At the end of the 2016-17 season, Saint Peter's secured a second-place finish in the MAAC with 23 wins, tying the second-highest number of wins in program history at the time.
While at Saint Peter’s, Clement recruited Sam Idowu, who finished his collegiate career fourth all-time in blocked shots for the Peacocks. Clement also recruited and developed all-conference guard Davauhnte Turner. He also assisted in the development of four additional all-conference honorees — Nick Griffin, Antwon Portley, Desi Washington and Trevis Wyche.
Clement earned his first assistant coach job at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, from 2011 to 2013. At the time, he was part of a staff that helped the Panthers to a 2011 NCAA Division II East Region semifinal appearance.
His first foray into coaching came at SUNY Cortland from 2009 to 2011, including his role as camp director for the SUNY Cortland athletic department in 2010.
Throughout his career, Clement has worked at a variety of camps throughout the country, including Hoop Group Elite, St. John’s University, Five-Star Basketball, Hoop Mountain, Reebok All-American, Duke University, Siena College, and the Nike Pre-Draft camp.
In addition to his coaching duties, he has been a member of the adjunct faculty and a capstone advisor for the Georgetown University Sports Industry Management graduate program since 2021.
A 2009 graduate of SUNY Potsdam with a bachelor’s degree in business economics, Clement played two seasons for the Bears. In 2011, he earned his master’s degree in sports management from SUNY Cortland.
