FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason defeated UMES 3-1 on Saturday, winning 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 25-18 at the Recreation Athletic Complex. The Patriots turned a 6-7 fourth-set deficit into an 11-8 lead before closing out the set 25-18.
The Patriots broke open a 6-6 set with a 7-0 run, taking a 13-6 lead behind six straight service points. UMES later cut the margin to 18-15, but the Green & Gold answered with the next two points and finished the set 25-17.
The Patriots' main push in the second set came after UMES led 15-9, with the Green & Gold scoring five of the next six points to get within 16-14. The stretch included three Patriots kills and two UMES errors, but UMES closed the set at 25-18.
The Green & Gold closed the third set by winning seven of the final eight rallies after holding an 18-14 lead, finishing off a 25-15 set win. The late stretch included four straight points on the Patriots' serve from 19-14 to 23-14, with UMES attack errors and a Green & Gold service ace accounting for the points.
In the fourth set, the Patriots separated by winning seven of eight rallies from an 11-10 lead to an 18-11 advantage, including four straight points on serve from 14-11 to 18-11. Earlier, the Green & Gold erased a 7-6 UMES lead and moved ahead 11-8, with
McKenna Reynolds serving during back-to-back points in that stretch. The Patriots closed the set at 25-18 on a UMES service error.
