FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason defeated Rhode Island 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-12) on Saturday. The Patriots hit .494 with 50 kills and seven attack errors while holding Rhode Island to a .098 hitting percentage. This performance marked the best single game hitting percentage in the post-2008 scoring era.
The Green & Gold closed the first set by scoring the final four points after Rhode Island moved within 21-20, finishing a 25-20 win on
Autumn Martinez-Robinson's service ace. Earlier,
Mia Hazelett served an ace during a Patriots stretch that built an 11-4 lead, with
Nia Thompson and
Kiera Hamilton adding kills in that sequence.
A 1-1 tie became a 9-3 Patriots lead in the second set, with
Meredith Brown recording three kills and Thompson adding four during that opening stretch. Hamilton later served back-to-back aces to put the Green & Gold ahead 19-10, and the Patriots closed the set on a Rhode Island attack error for a 25-15 win.
In the third set, the Patriots separated early, breaking a 2-2 score with four straight points on
Avery Booker's serve to go up 6-2. Brown had a kill and was credited on two blocks during that stretch, and the Green & Gold continued to finish through Hamilton, Thompson and
Gabriella Gelfound in a 25-12 set win.
