LEWISBURG, Pa. – George Mason senior forward
Gabin Thomelier scored his first goal with the Green and Gold, but the Patriots fell to Bucknell, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Holmes Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa.
George Mason (1-4-1, 0-1-0 Atlantic 10) took the lead over Bucknell (2-4-0, 1-0-0 Patriot League) off a set piece in the 27th minute. Junior forward
Martim Sereno bent a free kick on goal from 20 yards out that was punched clear by the Bison goalkeeper. Senior forward
James Eliuda gathered the loose ball and sent a touch into the six-yard box from just outside the penalty area where Thomelier scored with a low shot off the left post to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
The Patriots nearly added to the lead seven minutes into the second half. Sereno sent a corner kick into the box that deflected off a Bucknell defender and rolled toward the lower left corner, but the Bison goalkeeper dove out to make the save.
In the 57th minute, the Bison put a shot toward the George Mason goal from 16 yards out where the ball went off a Patriots defender into the net for the own goal to make it 1-1.
Just over three minutes later, Bucknell netted the eventual game-winner when freshman midfielder Hamish Riddell scored his first collegiate goal from just outside the penalty area with a finish into the upper left corner of the net to make the score 2-1.
With 18 minutes remaining in the match, Sereno took a cross on the left side of the goal from freshman forward
Amanueil Mequanint and put a high shot on frame but Bucknell junior defender Collin Sullivan elevated to clear the ball away with a header on the goal line.
In the 86th minute, the Bison capitalized on a turnover in the Patriots defensive third and Bucknell freshman midfielder Viktor Permyashkin scored to increase the advantage to 3-1.
