Patriots Drop Season Opener at No. 13 Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. –  The George Mason men's soccer team fell to No. 13 Vermont, 2-0, in the season opener on Thursday night in Burlington, Vt.

Vermont (1-0-0) took the lead over George Mason (0-1-0) in the 20th minute of play.  The Catamounts played a long pass ahead and graduate student forward David Ismail took a cross in the top-center of the penalty area, and found the back of the net with a low shot into the right corner.

In the 22nd minute, Vermont created another quality chance, but Patriots redshirt-senior goalkeeper Jack Desroches made his second big save of the first half.

In the 62nd of play, Desroches received a red card when he touched the ball outside the box forcing the Patriots to play the rest of the match with 10 players, with sophomore goalkeeper Angel Hernandez taking over in the frame.

In the 76th minute, Ismail took a lead pass and scored his second goal of the game into the upper right corner for the 2-0 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Catamounts outshot the Patriots,16-6, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.  Vermont had six corner kicks and George Mason earned five corner kicks in the match.

Senior midfielder Javier Montava Ortega (90 MIN) and sophomore forward Jaime Godinho (74 MIN) each finished with two shots and one shot on goal.

Fifth-year defender Pablo Rivero Toribio (90 MIN), fifth-year midfielder Matias de Jesus (62 MIN) and Hernandez (28 MIN, 1 SV) each made their George Mason debut.  Freshmen forwards Amanueil Mequanint (20 MIN) and Jeremy Orellana (16 MIN) both made their collegiate debut.

The Patriots host William & Mary in the home opener on Thursday, Aug. 27 with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
