FAIRFAX, Va. – Competing on their home track, the George Mason track & field teams delivered an impressive showing on Day One of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, highlighted by four medal-winning performances. Several Patriots posted personal-best marks while adding valuable points to the team standings, setting the tone for a competitive weekend.
Kennedy Drish earned the first podium finish for the Patriots. After capturing the A-10 indoor women's pole vault title, Drish opened her outdoor season by breaking George Mason's school record in the event. She capped off a dominant year by claiming gold with a clearance of 3.88m.
The Patriots swept the pole vault titles as
Walt Bannerman, a three-time A-10 champion, added another gold medal in the men's competition during his senior season. Bannerman cleared 5.20m to continue his dominance, finishing off an illustrious career in Green & Gold. Both Bannerman and Drish maintained commanding leads in the conference rankings throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons.
On the track,
Alex DeRoussel provided a strong start in the distance events. With the third-fastest men's 3000m steeplechase time in the conference this regular season, DeRoussel performed when points and medals were on the line. He clocked 9:00.15 to earn bronze—his first conference medal after finishing fifth at last year's outdoor championships.
The final event of the day delivered one of the most thrilling moments. In the men's 10,000m,
Lloyd Sheppard-Brown began the final lap in fifth place while La Salle's Charlie Hazlett held a seemingly commanding lead. Sheppard-Brown steadily moved up, then surged in the final straightaway to sprint past the leader and capture gold in 32:00.39. The transfer student secured his first A-10 medal in dramatic fashion.
Also in the 10,000m,
Biruk Beardsley moved from seventh at the bell lap to finish fifth in 32:04.11, contributing key points to the team total.
In the men's long jump, freshman
Kellen La Roche delivered a clutch performance, recording a personal-best 7.40m on his final attempt. The jump moved him from sixth to fourth place, adding important points for the Patriots.
Day One also featured several strong performances in preliminary rounds.
Joziah Johnson posted the fastest time in the men's 400m hurdles (52.10) to advance to the finals.
Davian Burke recorded the second-fastest time in the men's 110m hurdles with a season-best 14.05. On the women's side,
Kaela-Michelle O'Connor ran a personal-best 13.82 for the second-fastest time in the 100m hurdles preliminaries, while
