FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason senior shortstop
Owen Clyne has been named a Semifinalist for the College Baseball Foundation's Brooks Wallace Award, the organization announced on Wednesday.
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented later this year. It is names for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
Clyne is one of 50 shortstops nationally to earn recognition based on both their offensive and defensive production. The initial list was comprised of the top 100 shortstops.
Clyne, from Wichita, Kan., has started all 38 games at shortstop for the Patriots this season. He leads Patriots in triples (3), total bases (282), RBI (35), runs scored (39), on-base percentage (.443) and slugging percentage (.558). Clyne is tied for first in hits (52) and walks (24), is second in home runs (5) and doubles (9)., doubles (4).
Clyne has at least one hit in 35 of 38 games including 12 multi-hit games. He and has recorded three hitting streaks of at least eight games this season. Clyne posted a 13-game streak (March 13-April 3), an 11-game streak (Feb. 14-March 8) and an eight-game streak (April 10-21). He has a .965 fielding percentage, 51 put outs and 87 assists on 143 chances this season.
Clyne is one of three shortstops from the Atlantic 10 on the list, with Reece Moroney (Rhode Island) and Dyerson Wouters (Dayton).
The Brooks Wallace Award is one of four national awards presented by the College Baseball Foundation, along with the John Olerud Two-Way Player, National Pitcher and Buster Posey Catcher of the Year Award.
