PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Mason baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's, 17-9 and 15-6, on Saturday afternoon at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
GAME ONE
Saint Joseph's (24-23, 15-2 A-10) took the lead against George Mason (18-18, 10-7 A-10) graduate student starter
Diego Cardenas in the bottom of the first. The Hawks sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four RBI-singles and two walks to take the early 5-0 lead.
The Patriots got on the board in the top of the second against Hawks senior starter Cole Fehrman. With one out, junior third baseman
Jake Butler reached on an error and freshman second baseman
Julius Bagnerise followed with a single through the right side. Junior first baseman
Matthew Westley then plated two runs with a double to left field.
With one out in the top of the third, senior shortstop
Owen Clyne singled to the pitcher and went to second on a throwing error. Sophomore left fielder
Lucas Alberti followed with a double to left field for his 29th RBI of the season to cut the Hawks lead to 5-3. Graduate student center fielder
Luciano Terilli kept the inning going with a single to the shortstop. He stole second and on a throwing error by the catcher, Alberti raced home to make it a one-run game, 5-4.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on four hits and three walks against Cardenas and graduate student reliever
Tyson Willis to extend the advantage to 13-4. Saint Joseph's senior left fielder Joey Pagano had the big hit in the inning with a two-out grand slam.
The Patriots scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Graduate student catcher
Logan Vaughan knocked in a run with his third double of the season. Alberti and Terilli each had a RBI-single in the inning as the Patriots cut the lead to 13-7.
Saint Joseph's added four more runs in the home half of the fourth against Patriots junior relievers
Tanner Kaler and
Parker Thomas. Saint Joseph's sophomore Blake Primrose hit the second grand slam in two innings for the Hawks.
In the top of the ninth, Butler hit a two-run home run, his second of the season off Hawks sophomore reliever Sam Greer for the final runs of the game.
For the Patriots, Cardenas (3-5) allowed nine runs on six hits in 2.1 innings and took the loss. Willis surrendered four runs on three hits, and Kaler gave up two runs on one hit in the third inning. Thomas allowed two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings. Junior
Shaun Okeeffe struck out two of three batters in the eighth.
For the Hawks, Fehrman allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Greer (3-1) gave up two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings and earned the win.
GAME TWO
Saint Joseph's (25-13, 16-2 A-10) took the lead in the bottom of the first against George Mason (18-19, 10-8 A-10) sophomore starter
Jake Drumm. The Hawks began the inning with back-to-back singles and with one out, plated a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the second, the Hawks scored a run with a RBI-double and also hit a pair of two-run home runs to increase the lead to 6-0.
In the home half of the third, Saint Joseph's scored seven runs on seven hits against Drumm and graduate student reliever
Carter Kelsey to build a 13-0 advantage. Junior second baseman Tim Dickinson hit a two-run home run and Primrose hit a grand slam, his second in the two games.
The Patriots scored six runs on five singles in the top of the seventh against Hawks junior relievers Jackson Campbell and Justin Sweeney. Junior first baseman

For the Patriots, Drumm (3-1) allowed nine runs on 10 hits in 2.1 innings and took the loss. Kelsey gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits in 1.2 innings. Graduate student
Brandon Hsu pitched a hitless eighth. Freshman
Aiden Parker scattered two singles and struck out three over 3.0 innings.
For the Hawks, junior starter Luke Parise (3-1) scattered three singles over 6.0 scoreless innings and earned the win. In the eighth inning, Campbell gave up three runs on one hit and two walks, and Sweeney allowed two runs on two hits.
The Patriots host Jame Madison on Tuesday, April 21 with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
