TYSONS, Va. – The Patriots defeated Georgetown, 12-7, on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
THE LEADOFF
- Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Brant Ertel earned his first collegiate win
- Freshman second baseman Julius Bagnerise drove in three runs
- Senior shortstop Owen Clyne had three hits and scored three runs
- Senior third baseman Evan Blanchard reached base three times, drove in two runs and scored twice
- Every player in the lineup either scored or drove in at least one run in the game

Logan Rumberg and Georgetown (9-6) graduate student starter Trajan Lee kept the game scoreless through the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third, the Hoyas loaded the bases with a leadoff single, an error and a hit batter. Georgetown graduate student shortstop Connor Peek then drove in a pair of runs with a single through the right side to put the Hoyas in front, 2-0.
The Patriots dented the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. With one out, graduate student catcher
Logan Vaughan singled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bagnerise plated a run with a single to center to make it a one-run game at 2-1.
In the top of the sixth, the Patriots sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on five hits to take the lead, 5-2. Junior first baseman
Jake Butler led off the inning with his first home run of the season, a blast over the left-center field fence to even the score.Â
Clyne singled to left and with one out, sophomore center fielder
Lucas Alberti then kept the line moving with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Blanchard ripped a two-out, two-run single to center to put the Patriots in front for the first time. After Hoyas graduate student reliever Marshall Whitmer entered the game, Vaughan drove in a run with a single to increase the lead to 5-2.
Georgetown tied the game in the home half of the sixth against Ertel. With two out and two on, Hoyas sophomore center fielder Jackson Thomas hit a three-run home run to center field.
In the top of the seventh, the Patriots took advantage of two Hoyas errors to score a pair of runs to re-take the lead, 7-5. Terilli had a RBI-double in the inning and scored from second base on the second error of the inning.
The Patriots sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth against Hoyas graduate student reliever Griffin O-Connor to extend the advantage to 11-5. Senior right fielder
Drew Canody, Vaughan and Clyne each drove in a run with a single in the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Georgetown scored its final two runs of the day off Patriots graduate student
Carter Kelsey with a bases loaded groundout and a bunt single.
In the ninth, junior designated hitter
Vincent Cowdrey walked, Blanchard was hit by a pitch and Vaughan was issued a free pass to load the bases. Bagnerise then drove in the last run of the game with a sacrifice fly for the 12-7 final score.
For the Patriots, Rumberg allowed two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings with five strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision. Ertel (1-0) gave up three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings and earned his first NCAA win. Kelsey allowed two runs on two hits in the eighth. Sophomore
Jake Drumm pitched the ninth.
For the Hoyas, Lee (2-1) was charged with five runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Whitmer gave up two unearned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. O'Connor surrendered four runs on four hits in the eighth inning. Graduate student Will Newell pitched the ninth.
The Patriots and Hoyas wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
