FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason senior starter Logan Rumberg earned his third win of the season and redshirt-junior reliever Owen Stewart notched the save in the Patriots 4-3 victory over St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 opener on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

THE LEADOFF
  • Senior shortstop Owen Clyne drove in a run with a triple and scored twice.
  • Junior first baseman Jake Butler had two hits, reached base four times and scored a run.
  • Graduate student center fielder Luciano Terilli had two hits including a double and RBI.
  • Stewart struck out four of the seven batters he faced.
George Mason (7-8) took the lead against St. Bonaventure (4-12) senior starter David James in the bottom of the first.  With one out, sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti singled up the middle and scored on Clyne's triple that went over the head of the left fielder to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

Bulter followed with a walk to put runners on the corners and the Patriots then executed a double steal, with Bulter taking second and Clyne sliding across the plate ahead of the throw home to make it 2-0.  Terilli then knocked in a run with a double down the left field line to increase the lead to 3-0.

In the home half of the third, Clyne led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt.  Butler was hit by a pitch and with one out, stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position.  Junior catcher Vincent Cowdrey plated a run with a sacrifice fly to left field to extend the lead to 4-0.

After allowing back-to-back singles to start the game, Rumberg then retired 14 of the next 16 Bonnies batters through the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, St. Bonaventure made it a one-run game with three runs on two hits and an error against to make the score 4-3.

The Bonnies loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with two hit batters and an error against Patriots redshirt-sophomore reliever Brant Ertel.  Stewart entered the game and stuck out two batters to end the threat.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, St. Bonaventure put runners on first and second with a walk and an error, but a ground out ended the game.

For the Patriots, Rumberg (3-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and two walks, and earned the win.  Ertel gave up one hit in 1.1 innings.  Stewart worked 1.2 innings with four strikeouts to notch the save.
