FAIRFAX, Va. — On a day dedicated to honoring seniors, the George Mason University basketball team (19-8, 14-2 Atlantic 10) triumphed over George Washington University (14-15, 6-10 Atlantic 10) with a 67-52 victory at EagleBank Arena on Saturday.
George Mason started strong, quickly establishing momentum with a 7–0 run, highlighted by
Kennedy Harris's fastbreak 3-pointer at 5:59.
Zahirah Walton played a pivotal role, sinking free throws and grabbing a key steal that shifted the game in favor of the Green & Gold. Though the Revolutionaries briefly narrowed the gap,
MJ Johnson's jumper with 31 seconds on the clock secured the Patriots' lead, ending the quarter at 21–17.
In the second quarter, George Mason surged ahead with a crucial 3-pointer by
Mary Amoateng at 5:36, assisted by Harris, sparking another 7–0 run. A defensive stop and Harris's fast-break layup further extended the lead. The Green & Gold capitalized on turnovers, racking up eight fast-break points and limiting the Revolutionaries to just nine in the quarter. The half concluded with George Mason leading 37–26.
George Mason solidified its lead in the third quarter, starting with Walton's jumper at 9:17. Harris widened the gap with a fastbreak 3-pointer at 6:26, again assisted by Amoateng. Their dominance on the offensive boards, securing six rebounds, helped maintain the momentum. Despite George Washington's attempts to rally, the Patriots' defense and free-throw accuracy kept them in control. Walton's three-point play with 2 seconds left in the quarter brought the score to 54-42.
The Green & Gold strengthened their lead in the fourth quarter, pushing it to 57–42 with Walton's jumper at 6:51. Defensive pressure forced multiple turnovers, which were converted into points, including a key layup by Amoateng, assisted by
Louis Volker.
Jada Brown added a jumper and two crucial free throws, stretching the score to 63–47 with 2:32 remaining.
Even with a late three-pointer from the Revolutionaries, the Patriots stayed in command, with Trinity Massenberg sealing the quarter with a layup at 42 seconds left. The game wrapped up with George Mason claiming a 67–52 victory, holding firm during the senior day celebrations on their home court.
