FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason (17-8, 12-2 Atlantic 10) claimed a hard-fought victory over the University of Richmond (22-5, 12-2 Atlantic 10), winning 46-37 at EagleBank Arena. The Patriots' defense was relentless, amassing 47 rebounds and 10 steals, while forcing the Spiders into 13 turnovers.
George Mason started strong by swiftly countering Richmond's early points.
Jada Brown nailed a fastbreak 3-pointer at 6:28, evening the score at 3–3. The momentum swung when
MJ Johnson sank a 3-pointer at 3:21, trimming Richmond's lead to 8–6.
Mary Amoateng then launched the Green & Gold into the lead with her own 3-pointer at 2:49, putting them up 9–8. The Patriots held onto their edge, finishing the first quarter 12–11.
Early in the second quarter, George Mason built momentum with solid defensive plays, including a pivotal steal by
MJ Johnson, who followed it up with a layup at 8:09, extending the lead to 14-11.
Zahirah Walton kept the pressure with a layup assisted by Makayla Johnson at 7:33, making it 16-11. Richmond tried to close the gap, but the Patriots answered with a critical 3-pointer by
Kennedy Harris at 1:56, assisted by Walton, to grab a slim lead. Walton's layup with 51 seconds left ensured George Mason ended the quarter ahead, tied at 21-20. Both teams tallied nine points for the quarter.
In the third quarter, George Mason surged ahead with a commanding 9-0 run, highlighted by three straight 3-pointers from
Jada Brown,
Louis Volker, and
Kennedy Harris. Richmond's only reply came via a jumper, but the Patriots stayed in control, closing the quarter with a 38-28 lead.
The Patriots maintained their grip in the fourth quarter with clutch baskets from
Mary Amoateng and
Kennedy Harris. Richmond tried to rally, but George Mason's defense was unwavering, holding the Spiders to just three field goals.
Jada Brown's layup and two late jumpers from Harris sealed the deal. George Mason wrapped up the game with a 46-37 triumph over Richmond.
