FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason defeated George Washington 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-19) on Wednesday. The Patriots hit .308 with 42 kills and held George Washington to a .047 attack percentage.
The Patriots erased an early 4-3 deficit in the first set, moving ahead on a George Washington attack error and reaching 8-5 on a block by
Mia Hazelett and
Nia Thompson.
Kiera Hamilton and Thompson supplied key swings as the Green & Gold stayed in front, though George Washington cut the margin to 24-22 late. Thompson finished the set from
Ava Cheney for a 25-22 Patriots win.
The Patriots used a 6-0 run from a 12-11 edge to build an 18-11 lead in the second set, with
Avery Booker serving the final five points of the stretch. Hamilton supplied two kills during that surge and Cheney added another, and the Green & Gold finished the set at 25-18.
The Patriots created separation in the third set with four straight points, moving from 14-13 to 18-13 on a George Washington service error, a GW attack error, and kills by Hamilton and Thompson. The Green & Gold stayed in front from there, with Hamilton and
Gabriella Gelfound adding late kills before Thompson finished the set from
Ava Cheney's assist for a 25-19 win.
