Kelly Janssen tallied his team-leading fourth goal of the season to lift the Patriots to a 4-0 victory over Loyola Chicago on Wednesday night at George Mason Stadium.
George Mason (2-5-3, 1-2-1 A10) had the first quality scoring chance of the match against Loyola Chicago (6-4-3, 1-2-1 A10). In the ninth minute, the Patriots nearly capitalized off a corner kick on a header from six yards out that went off the crossbar.
In the 27th minute, Loyola Chicago was called for a handball in the penalty area. On the penalty kick, Montava Ortega's shot was stopped by Ramblers junior goalkeeper Max Ionita, but the officials ruled the goalkeeper moved early. On the retry, Ionita again made a diving save to his right, but Montava Ortega pounced on the rebound and tallied his third goal of the season into the upper right corner of the net to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Just over a minute later, Sereno took a shot from the right side of the penalty area that deflected off a Ramblers defender and into the center of the net for an own goal to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the 40th minute, the Ramblers were called for a handball on the goal line and Sereno converted the penalty kick to make the score 3-0.
The Patriots outshot the Ramblers 19-4 in the first half and held Loyola Chicago without a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of play. Loyola Chicago junior forward Benji Chavarria and freshman defender Lucas were sent off with a red card in the first half, forcing the Ramblers to play with nine field players for the remained of the match.
In the 76th minute, Janssen scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a rebound from inside the six-yard box to pad the advantage to 4-0.
The four goals scored are a season-high for the Patriots and are the most that the Ramblers have surrendered in their 13 matches.
