DAVIDSON, N.C. — George Mason defeated Davidson 3-1 on Saturday, winning 25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22 at John M. Belk Arena. The Patriots finished with 11 total blocks and eight service aces, including a 16-kill fourth set to close the match.
The Patriots' first set turned on a six-point run from a 13-9 deficit to a 15-13 lead, with
Mia Hazelett serving two aces and
Kiera Hamilton,
Gabriella Gelfound and
Nia Thompson each recording kills in the stretch. Davidson later cut the margin to 23-21, but Hamilton answered with a kill before she teamed with
Meredith Brown on the closing block to finish a 25-21 set win.
The Green & Gold erased a 23-20 deficit late in the second set and finished off a 26-24 win. Hamilton's kill started the comeback, and blocks involving Thompson, Hazelett and
Ava Cheney helped pull the Patriots even at 23. After Davidson reached set point at 24-23, Thompson tied it with a kill, Hazelett's block put the Patriots ahead, and a Davidson attack error ended the set.
The Patriots brought the third set even at 10-10 behind a Hamilton kill and consecutive Davidson attack errors, then got back within 15-14 on a block by Cheney and Hazelett. Davidson answered with the next three points and later reached 24-17, closing the set 25-19 despite late Patriots points from a Hamilton kill and an
Avery Booker ace.
The Green & Gold turned the fourth set after falling behind 19-17, using a Davidson attack error, a Thompson kill and Thompson's service ace to move in front 20-19. After Davidson tied it at 20, Thompson and Hamilton put the Patriots back ahead with consecutive kills. Hamilton added kills at 23-21 and on set point as the Patriots won the set 25-22.
