FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team fell to Duquesne, 2-1, on Saturday night in an Atlantic 10 match at George Mason Stadium.
George Mason (1-5-1, 0-2-1 A10) recorded the first quality chance of the match against Duquesne (5-2-2, 2-1-0 A10) midway through the first half. Senior defender
David Garcia created a scoring opportunity, but his shot went off the crossbar.
In the 39th minute, Dukes senior midfielder Tyler Kato was fouled inside the penalty area when he was pushed to the turf. Duquesne senior Jaxson Ervin stepped to the spot and sent a low shot toward the left corner where Patriots sophomore goalkeeper
Angel Hernandez dove out to make a spectacular save.
With just over a minute remaining in the half, Hernandez stopped Kato's shot from 14 yards out with a diving save to his left.
In the 72nd minute, senior midfielder
James Eliuda took a pass and raced into the penalty area where he was fouled by the Dukes' goalkeeper when he drove out attempting to make a save. On the ensuing penalty kick,
Javier Montava Ortega blistered a shot that went off the hands of the goalkeeper and into the net for his second goal of the season to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Duquesne scored the equalizer five minutes later when senior defender Ashwin Menon took a cross and scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-1.
The Patriots were booked for red cards in the 74th and 83rd minutes and played the final eight minutes of the match with only eight field players.
Duquesne junior defender Ofek Sasson scored the game-winner in the 88th minute to lift the Dukes to the 2-1 win.
