FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason (13-8, 5-4 Atlantic 10) lost to VCU (9-8, 7-2 Atlantic 10) 3-2 on Saturday, with set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 26-24, 11-15. The Patriots erased a 7-4 fourth-set deficit to move ahead 9-8 and won the set 26-24, but the push was not enough to overcome VCU.

The Patriots created separation in the first set by winning seven of eight rallies, moving from a 15-14 lead to a 22-15 advantage behind kills from Kiera Hamilton, a service ace from Avery Booker and a Meredith Brown kill. VCU narrowed the margin late, but the Green & Gold closed the set at 25-21 on a VCU service error.

The Patriots' late push in the second set cut VCU's 19-12 lead to 23-21. The surge included kills from Hamilton and Nia Thompson, an Ava Cheney block and an Autumn Martinez-Robinson service ace. VCU answered with two of the final three points to take the set, 25-22.

The Green & Gold's main push in the third set came with Hamilton serving, as Thompson and Brown kills helped produce four straight points and pull the score to 18-15 after VCU had led 18-10. Mia Hazelett later added back-to-back kills as the Patriots reached 23-20, but VCU finished off the set 25-21.

The Patriots answered a 23-22 deficit by taking four of the last five points, with Nia Thompson's kill tying the set and Hamilton finishing a 26-24 set win with a kill. Earlier, the Green & Gold erased a 7-4 hole, using two block-assisted points and a Hazelett kill to move ahead 9-8.

The Patriots' main push in the fifth set came after VCU reached 14-7, as Booker served through four straight points to cut the deficit to 14-11. Hamilton had two kills during that stretch, both assisted by Cheney, and Brown combined with Hamilton on a block to start the run. VCU took the final point to close the set, 15-11.
