FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason senior midfielder Javier Montava Ortega scored his fourth goal of the season to vault the Patriots to a 1-0 home victory in a pivotal Atlantic 10 match on Saturday.

George Mason (3-6-3, 2-2-1 A10) had the first quality scoring chance of the match against George Washington (4-6-2, 0-3-2 A10) in the 25th minute of play.  Senior midfielder James Eliuda took a cross and put a shot into the upper right corner of the net from inside the six.  After a VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call on the Patriots.

In the 26th minute, the Patriots were called for a foul inside the penalty area.  On the ensuing penalty kick, George Washington senior forward Yago Torres' first career penalty kick attempt was stopped by Patriots sophomore goalkeeper Angel Hernandez with a diving save to his left.

The Patriots tallied the lone goal of the match early in the second half of play.  Senior midfielder Quentin Clain maneuvered away from a defender on the left side and played a perfect ball to Montava Ortega, who blistered a shot from 30 yards out into the upper right corner under the cross bar for his fourth goal of the season to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

George Washington nearly scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute but senior forward Jaden Dubon hit the crossbar with a shot from 25 yards out.

George Mason concluded its five-match homestand and  improved to 30-18-4 all-time against George Washington.
