FAIRFAX, Va. – In a matchup between two twop-25 teams, the 22nd ranked Patriots fell to No. 6 West Virginia, 6-4, on Sunday night at George Mason Stadium.
West Virginia (3-1-1) took the lead over George Mason (2-2-0) in the 13th minute. Off a cross from the right side of the penalty area, junior forward Pablo Pozos scored his fourth goal of the season into the lower right corner from eight yards out to put the Mountaineers in front, 1-0.
The Mountaineers increased the lead in the 24th minute. Freshman midfielder Jaun Alvarez scored his first collegiate goal, with a shot from 13 yards out that deflected past the Patriots goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
The Patriots evened the score with a pair of goals in a span of 49 seconds.
In the 30th minute, graduate student forward
Jacobo Sanfeliu was awarded a penalty kick after he was fouled by the Mountaineers goalkeeper in the penalty area. He tallied his third goal of the season with a low shot into the right corner of the net to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the 3st minute, sophomore forward
Martim Sereno scored the equalizer from the center of the penalty area into the low right corner to tie the match, 2-2. Graduate student defender

West Virginia reclaimed the lead in the 38th minute when senior midfielder Felix Ewald found open space on the left side and scored his first goal of the season to make the score 3-2.
The Mountaineers expanded the lead early in the second half. In the 50th minute a long ball ahead found freshman forward Sammie Walker, who maneuvered past the charging Patriots goalkeeper and scored his first collegiate goal into the open net to make the score 4-2.
In the 55th minute, senior forward Marcus Caldeira scored his fourth goal of the season with a shot into the lower right corner to extend the Mountaineers lead to 5-2.
The Patriots pulled to within two goals in the 67th minute. After Sanfeliu was pulled down in the penalty area, Patriots graduate student forward
Nacho Diaz Barragan scored his first goal with the Green and Gold when he converted the penalty kick straight into the middle of the net to make it a 5-3 game.
West Virginia added to its advantage in the 73rd minute when Pozos netted his second goal of the match and team-leading fifth goal of the season from 18 yards out into the lower left.
In the 81st minute, the Patriots pulled to within two goals off a set piece. Junior midfielder
Javier Montava played a corner kick into the penalty area where the ball was knocked up in the air to junior forward
Abdul Kamara, who sent the perfect finish into the upper left corner.
