FAIRFAX, Va. – The 22nd ranked George Mason men's soccer team hosts No. 6 West Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 7, with the opening kick scheduled for 4 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.

The Patriots are facing the Mountaineers for the first time in eight years. George Mason hosted West Virginia on Sept. 16, 2017, with the Mountaineers claiming a 3-2 overtime win. The home team has won four of the five meetings in the all-time series.Â

The Mountaineers have recorded five NCAA Tournament wins over the last four season, including a run to the 2023 College Cup for the first time in program history.

Rich Costanzo enters his fourth season with the Patriots. He was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year last season after leading the Patriots to one of the most successful regular seasons in program history.Â

Costanzo guided the club Atlantic 10 regular season title for the first time in program history in 2024. The Patriots finished the season 13-4-1 overall, won seven of eight matches at home in the regular season, went 6-1-1 in conference play to post six wins in the A-10 regular season for the first time, and after earning the top-seed in the A-10 Championship, advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

The Patriots climbed to 13th in the United Soccer Coaches Association poll last season, the first time in 10 years that George Mason has been in the national rankings. Â The Patriots finished the A-10 regular season third in both goals (33) and goals per match (2.2) and tied for the third-fewest goals allowed (17).

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia is 2-1-1 overall. The Mountaineers are 2-1-0 at home and 0-0-1 on the road.
The Mountaineers won their first two matches of the season at home with a 5-2 victory over Manhattan (Aug. 21) and a 4-0 win over La Salle (Aug. 25). West Virginia then played to a 0-0 draw at then-No. 16 Akron (Aug. 29).
Last time out, the Mountaineers fell 1-0 to No. 13 Gardner-Webb on Wednesday in Morgantown, W.Va. West Virginia didn't lose at home last season, with a mark of 9-0-4 in 2024.
The Mountaineers are facing a team ranked in the top-25 for the third straight game.
Senior forward Marcus Caldeira and junior forward Pablo Pozo share the team lead in goals (3). Caldeira also paces the Mountaineers in assists (3).
The Mountaineers swept Sun Belt Conference weekly awards last week, with junior defender Thijs Veldhorst named Defensive Player of the Week and Caldeira selected Offensive Player of the Week.Â
The Mountaineers were predicted to finish second in the Sun Belt Coaches Poll behind 2024 national runner-up Marshall. Caldeira was named Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
In 2024, West Virginia won both the Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament championship, the first time that the Mountaineers have won both in the same season in program history. In the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the Mountaineers defeated North Florida, 2-1, in Morgantown, W.Va. before falling on the road to No. 11 Virginia, 2-1.

The crowd of 3,077 marked the largest for a George Mason men's soccer match in 25 years. The 1,385 students in attendance set a new program record.

George Mason then plays two non-conference matches. The Patriots are on the road against UMBC (Sept. 20, 7 p.m.) in Baltimore, Md. and then back home to take on Georgetown (Sept. 23, 7 p.m.).

The Patriots will play two straight games on the road for the only time during the season when they travel to face Loyola-Chicago (Sept. 27, 7 p.m.) in Chicago, Ill. to close out the six games in the month of September. George Mason will make the trip to George Washington (Oct. 4, 7 p.m.) in Washington, D.C. to begin the six-game October slate.
