FAIRFAX, Va. –  Junior forward Kelly Janssen scored two goals but the Patriots fell to Georgetown 5-2 on Tuesday night at George Mason Stadium.

Georgetown (5-2-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) took the lead over George Mason (3-3-1, 0-0-1 A-10) early in the first half.

In the fourth minute of play, Georgetown sophomore forward Mitchell Baker took a cross that was nearly broken up and scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Hoyas in front, 1-0.  Georgetown has scored the first goal in each of its last seven matches.

The Patriots scored the equalizer in the 38th minute.  Junior midfielder James Eliuda played the ball through defenders on the right side ahead to graduate student defender Jordi Navio Sanchez, who sent a perfect cross from the right side of the penalty area all the way to the left side of the six-yard box.

Janssen charged to the ball and in one motion blistered a shot off the goalkeeper with the right foot inside the left post to tie the game, 1-1.

Less than seven minutes later, freshman forward Jaime Godinho made a good run into the penalty area and passed the ball back to graduate student forward Nacho Diaz Barragan.  Barragan's shot was blocked but deflected right to Janssen who sent a low shot under the goalkeeper and into the low right to put the Patriots up, 2-1.

Janssen recorded the second two-goal game of his career, both at George Mason Stadium.  He also scored twice in a span of 2:09 (63', 65') in a 4-1 win over St. Bonaventure on October 26, 2024.

The Hoyas scored four goals in a span of 12 minutes in the second half.

Georgetown netted the equalizer in the 71st minute.  Senior midfielder Zach Zengue sent a free kick from just outside the penalty area into the box, where the ball went off the head of a Patriots defender and into the lower right to tie the game, 2-2.

Georgetown took the lead in the 78th minute off another set piece.  Junior midfielder Matthew Van Horn sent a corner kick into the box where sophomore defender Jack Lindimore converted with a header into the low left corner to give the Hoyas a 3-2 lead.

Van Horn converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute for his first goal of the season and Zengue converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute for his eighth goal of the season for the 5-2 final score.

The meeting between the two clubs was the first in the regular season in 34 years (October 16, 1991) and the Hoyas made their first trip to Fairfax in 29 years (October 18, 1986).
