FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason women's basketball head coach
Vanessa Blair-Lewis has announced the addition of Kate McCarney as the program's Content Graduate Assistant.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., McCarney comes to Fairfax after serving as an assistant women's basketball coach at Randolph-Macon College, where she helped guide the program to an ODAC Championship and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, she also directed the team's creative content efforts.
"A product of a successful, championship-winning program, Kate knows what excellence looks like—and how to help build it," said Blair-Lewis. "Her drive, discipline, and passion for the game set her apart, while her eye for quality content and ability to tell a story make her a standout talent in today's fast-paced media and coaching landscape."
McCarney, a 2023 graduate of Skidmore College, earned her B.A. in psychology with minors in business and media & film studies. While at Skidmore, she was a standout on the basketball court, helping lead the Thoroughbreds to a Liberty League Championship in 2023. She was named the Liberty League Tournament Most Outstanding Player and received the Team Leadership Award during her senior season.
"Kate brings an incredible blend of basketball knowledge, creative instincts, and leadership," said Blair-Lewis. "She's ambitious, eager to grow, and holds herself to a high standard—whether she's creating content, connecting with athletes, or breaking down the game. She's exactly the kind of person we want in our program."
She is currently pursuing her master's degree in communications at George Mason. In her role with the Patriots, McCarney will oversee photo and video production, graphics, and social media for the women's basketball program.
Outside of basketball, McCarney is an avid runner training for the 2025 NYC Marathon. She also enjoys lifting, travel, storytelling, hiking, and exploring the outdoors.
