FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason women's volleyball improved to 2-0 on the weekend, defeating UMBC 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20) on Saturday at the Recreation & Athletic Complex. The victory moved the Patriots to 5-3 on the season.
The Green & Gold opened strong, using kills from Kiera Hamilton and Nia Thompson to establish early control. Timely blocking by Chelsea Colter and Haley Graetz disrupted UMBC's rhythm, while Hamilton finished the set with five kills to secure the opener.
The Retrievers responded in the second, capitalizing on Patriot attack errors. Despite kills from Thompson and Meredith Brown, UMBC took the set, evening the match at 1-1.
The Patriots bounced back with a balanced attack, highlighted by Thompson's six kills and a serving run from Mia Hazelett. Colter's presence at the net frustrated UMBC hitters, and Brown sealed the set with a kill to give George Mason the 2-1 advantage.
In the decisive frame, Hamilton and Thompson took over, combining for 12 kills. Cheney and Camryn Weldon directed the offense with precision, while Hazelett's serving run gave the Patriots breathing room. Hamilton's final kill capped the match, securing the 3-1 victory.
