Patriots Score Late Goal in Draw with Davidson in Atlantic 10 Opener

FAIRFAX, Va. – Graduate student forward Nacho Diaz Barragan scored late in the second half, while graduate student goalkeeper Jaume Salvado stopped a penalty kick in the second half in a 1-1 draw against Davidson in the Atlantic 10 opener on Friday night at George Mason Stadium.

In the 82nd minute of play, Patriots graduate student defender Jordi Navio Sanchez sent a ball into the box, where Diaz Barragan scored into the left side of the net for the equalizer.

Davidson (2-2-1, 0-0-1 A-10) took the lead over George Mason (2-2-1, 0-0-1 A-10 ) early on the first half.  Junior defender Ayman Maadir scored his second goal of the season off a throw in in the 13th minute from just outside the six-yard box to put the Wildcats in front, 1-0.

Salvado made four saves in the match, with three spectacular stops in the second half to deny the Wildcats their second goal.

In the 75th minute, the Patriots were called for a hand ball inside the penalty area and the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick.  Maadir stepped to the penalty mark and sent a low shot toward the right side of the net, where Salvado dove out to make the save to keep the Patriots within a goal.  Earlier in the second half, Salvado made a diving save to his right to keep the Wildcats from increasing their lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Patriots outshot the Wildcats, 19-13, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.  George Mason had eight corner kicks and Davidson had five corner kicks in the match.

Sophomore forward Martim Sereno (90 minutes) took four shots with three on goal.  Graduate student forward Jacobo Sanfeliu (77 minutes) recorded three shots with one on frame.  Graduate student midfielder Kenzo Brito (13 minutes) had two shots with one shot on goal.

The Patriots are on the road to face UMBC on Saturday, Sept. 20 with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park in Baltimore, Md.
